My Investor Journey

Part of why I love helping people become real estate investors is because - truth time - it's a major part of my real estate business. But it's actually so much more than that. I became an investor myself when I hadn't previously thought I could. Even knowing the real estate market and understanding the numbers, I just hadn't thought about taking the first step on this incredible path to building wealth. But once I did, I realized how passionate I was about the financial transformation I was creating in my own life, and about helping others do the same. I'm sharing my own personal journey here in hopes of motivating others to consider leveraging real estate investments to help fund their dreams and their lives. Working in the mortgage industry, I was always the advisor, never the investor.

the back story

Before I ever took a single step toward becoming an investor, I spent nearly a decade in the mortgage industry, providing detailed property valuations and working closely with the major banks to help them evaluate their assets. In doing all of that, I realized I was way more knowledgeable than I'd ever given myself credit for. As I focused more on real estate, I found myself analyzing deals to help my investor clients, and yet I never once considered helping myself.


THE ADVENTURE BEGINS

When the mortgage branch I worked for closed their doors, it was as if the stars aligned: I realized I no longer wanted to rely on anyone else to provide for my family. I had spoken with my private lender a couple of years earlier, and now it finally seemed like the time to take a leap of faith. Problem was, I had no money to put down on what I wanted to be my very first flip acquisition. I wound up approaching my parents to borrow the down payment - they were SO hesitant at first, I was almost offended that they didn't believe in me!

Was I really ready for all THIS? Oh, yes... yes I was!

WHAT A RIDE

My first flip was a wild ride to say the least! I went through three different contractors, found out I was pregnant with my second child partway through, and ended up running the remainder of the project myself after firing the last contractor I worked with. Whew! That was quite a learning curve - and also the best thing that could have happened! I learned firsthand how much everything costs, the ins and outs of building codes, how to handle contractors, and where to find all the not-so-common (and totally beautiful) finishes for a steal! I ended up selling my investment property in less than two days after putting the house on the market, at full price, and while six months pregnant! After that adventure (and still pregnant!) I wasted no time in diving right back in to purchase my next investment.
